Deep Dive: What are proteins?
Proteins, also called “Eiweiße” in German, are essential macronutrients made up of amino acids. These amino acids are the building blocks of life and play a central role in many biological processes. There are 21 different amino acids in total, some of which the body can produce itself. The others – 9 in total – are the so-called essential amino acids, which must be obtained from food.
And because proteins play such an important role in many bodily functions, getting enough protein is crucial! Let’s now take a closer look at what this means in numbers.
How much protein per day?
There is still no consensus on the ideal protein intake. Leading experts such as Dr. Peter Attia recommend 1.6–2 g of protein per kg of body weight per day to optimally supply the body.
To be on the safe side, we follow this guideline and also recommend 2 g of protein per kg of body weight daily. Simply multiply your body weight by 2 and you’ll have calculated your optimal daily protein requirement.
